The name Ursula comes from Latin and means ‘little bear’.
The legend of Ursula undoubtedly has a historical core. Despite having vowed herself to God as a young woman, her father promised her to a pagan king. In preparation for the marriage, Ursula traveled with a group of maidens and her servants to France. While sailing along the Rhine, angels revealed to Ursula in a dream that she should first travel to Rome. On their return journey, they were captured by barbarian Huns and suffered terrible martyrdom.
Patroness of: youth, teachers, female educational institutions; the city of Cologne; intercessor for a good marriage and sick children.
