Description

Saint Adalbero of Würzburg

Feast day: October 6th.

The name originates from the German words adal, noble, and bero, bear.

Adalbero was born around the year 1010 in Upper Austria. His parents were a count and countess, so he received a good education and became a priest, soon rising to the position of bishop. He was known for building many churches, including the cathedral in Würzburg, which was initiated by his predecessor in the bishopric. During the Investiture Controversy, he sided with the papal faction and was consequently exiled. However, he declared that he would rather die than support the opposing side.

Patron of the church.
