Description

Saint Matthew

He is celebrated on September 21st

The name originates from Greek and means ‘gift of the Lord’.

Matthew was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and the author of the Gospel. By profession, he was a tax collector, and his job was despised among the Jews, as it was considered exploitative and unjust. When Jesus called him to be one of his disciples, Matthew was humbled and without hesitation, he left everything to follow him. After Jesus’ death, he wrote the Gospel and went on a mission to spread the Christian faith in Ethiopia.

Patron saint of tax collectors, officials, accountants, and customs officers; against alcoholism and incurable diseases.

Name Variations: Matt, Matty, Mat, Matthias, Matthieu, Mattie, Mattison, Mattyson, Thew.
