Saint George
Feast day: April 23.
The name originates from Greek and means ‘farmer, cultivator’.
St. George is the subject of many legends and is consistently one of the most revered saints. He became a military tribune at the age of twenty and was highly favored by Emperor Diocletian. When the emperor issued an edict to persecute Christians, George went to him and revealed that he was also a Christian. Because his persuasion did not change his principles, the emperor sentenced him to death.
Patron saint of: scouts, miners, blacksmiths, farmers, soldiers, prisoners, riders, artists, horses and livestock, travelers, medics, England and many cities, including Ljubljana, Ptuj, Piran, and Genoa, protection against wartime dangers, temptations, intercessor for good weather and in times of distress.
