Description

Saint Florian

Feast day: May 4th.

The name originates from Latin and means ‘blooming, splendid.’

Saint Florian was a Roman Christian saint who was born in the 3rd century in the Roman Empire. He served as a Roman soldier and centurion during the time of Emperor Diocletian. Later, he embraced the Christian faith and preached it among soldiers and the people. During that period, the Romans persecuted Christians, which led the representative of Emperor Diocletian to decide to torture and kill him. He was killed by being tied to millstones and thrown into the River Enns.

The most famous legend of Saint Florian relates to his courageous rescue from a fire in Rome. According to this legend, during one of his military assignments, Florian managed to extinguish a fire with water from his helmet, saving a burning house. He is often depicted as a soldier with a helmet fighting against fires.

Patron Saint: firefighters, chimney sweeps; brewers, coopers, potters, blacksmiths; Poland, Austria, and the cities of Linz, Bologna, and Krakow; protects against fires and floods; against infertility of fields.
